CentOS 4.4

I installed CentOS 4.4 under VMWare tonight (this morning?!) It seems that a lot of new packages have been backported from Fedora 5/6, like updated Mozilla apps, Frysk, Wireshark etc; there’s even a project to repackage Fedora Extras here, as well as all the non-RHEL repositories here.

I tried installing Fedora 6test3, but it doesn’t seem to work for me, I might download a prebuilt VM I found here.

Update: I downloaded the FC6t3 image, not sure VMWare Tools likes Xorg 7.1, there doesn’t seem to be much new over FC5 – mainly eye candy, and not even 2.6.18 kernel!

Thursday

We’ve been putting the new liner on M&D’s pool today, we got it done by about 5pm, including picking up new sand – although we have to let out some slack tomorrow morning now it’s got some water in it. It was a good workout, shovelling water and sand, plus the algae will do wonder for my skin I’m sure 😉

It’s been an absolute scorcher today, bit of a wind, but not a hurricane like Scotland has seen!

VS2005

I’ve been using Visual Studio 2005 Pro today to play with some more C#. I must say that the whole strictly-typed thing is a bit of a pain. Having to use f-notation and explicit casts seems counter-productive, especially when C# defaults to Doubles instead of the more efficient but less accurate Floats.

I think C# is very much like Java in that it’s mainly about learning the Framework (API/library) rather than keywords of the language itself, as there’s already a method for doing pretty much everything in the Framework already, plus of course the IDE has code completion etc. to hold your hand. It’s kinda the reverse of Perl or PHP where you learn the language and sometimes use CPAN/PEAR modules.

Friday

Mum & Pip went to Leroy Merlin today and got me 10% off the four windows I need for the shell, came to under 500e as they were slightly cheaper than in the catalogue. The shell will look like a regular house from the outside with new windows and doors.

Mum & Dad got a new liner for the pool as it’s still leaking despite about a dozen patches I put on it, although it hasn’t stopped raining for 24 hours, so it might be a bit pointless fitting it until next year…..
