GTK+

I had a quick play with pygtk2 today, it’s very similar to tkinter in programming style. I must try the Glade tutorial next, although I’ve hated Glade before when I’ve tried it in C++. Installing pyqt4 from the kde-redhat repository seemingly hosed my Gnome install, although what it actually did was set KDE to the default session handler and login manager without asking me. Nice one KDE 😉 I must say that pyqt4 seems a lot more like C++ and less pythonic, it’s getting to the point where you might as well just use Designer and output to C++ instead of Python.

Sunday in the country

Just got back from The Forest Of Dean, which is a big forest with sculpture trails on the border of Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and Monmouth (Wales). We went to a riverside nice pub, I had a “Butty Bach” Welsh real ale which was lovely, it means something like “little friend”, there was plenty of buxom talent around too, mostly gypo’s by the looks of it though. For lunch I had herbie sausages, then we went on a boat ride up the river where apparently some of the biggest salmon in England have been caught (up to 48lbs!

Packing

Been busy packing tonight, my room looks pretty bare now. I should get everything in the car no problem, I might do a mock pack this weekend to make sure. I’ve essentially packed everything except for one PC (gotta download some MP3’s off the laptop onto the PC and then I can pack it) and my clothes, which I think will mostly go in the suitcase. I’ve got a load of old towels and stuff to use to pad things out (like making sure the paint doesn’t move around) and to cover stuff up in the car.

Bloody ebuyer!

I waited for the ebuyer sale to put my order through, and it turned out to be crap, just a few 2nd-hand monitors! So it meant that I had to pay more shipping to get my goods to me before I leave the country. Then about an hour after I ordered the stuff ebuyer said that there may be shipping delays! So I phoned them up and apparently, even though you select your shipping method by delivery date, they cannot guarantee that delivery date – so why bother with couriers?

Tuesday

I went to B&Q and Homebase to get a lightswitch for my new bathroom. I got a nice chrome rose bit and a blue/chrome handle that is a lightbulb, it’s lovely! They had chrome “teardrop” handles, but they were so heavy (looked like a fishing lure!) that if you swang the cord a bit too much you’d end up smashing the shower! Work’s starting to shit themselves a bit, we’re trying to organise a backup server (probably rebuild the old development UltraSparc with Perl, Bind and Apache), I’m going to have to [re]write a monitoring script, and they’re going to have to do the release without me in a couple of weeks time, which means I’ve got to explain to them how to do all the little hacks I have to do to migrate from the old servers to the new servers without a proper staging environment.
